Stock worth around £20,000 was damaged in an arson attack on the toilet roll aisle of a South East Cornwall superstore this week. As customers and staff were evacuated, firefighters from Callington were called to the town's Tesco store at just before 7pm on Wednesday. On arrival, crews confirmed there had been a fire involving the toilet roll aisle. A brigade spokesman said that a member of the store's staff had used two extinguishers on the fire and that firefighters deployed one hosereel to fully extinguish the blaze. A positive pressure ventilation fan was then used to ventilate the store. A police spokesman said that officers had been called to the scene and established that arson was the cause. Yesterday investigations were continuing. Customers and staff had to be evacuated as smoke began to fill the store and it is estimated that £20,000 of damage was caused to stock including clothing, mainly as a result of the smoke. A Tesco spokesman said yesterday: 'I can confirm that there was a fire at our Callington store. 'The building was evacuated swiftly and closed for the rest of the evening. 'I'm pleased to confirm that, as of 7am this morning, the store was back open for business and fully operational.'
