This year's Callington Honey Fair has been described as 'the best year we've had for ages'.

Sunshine greeted visitors to the town for this year's event as the streets started to fill up early in the day.

By mid morning the town was already bustling as people viewed the range of stalls, traders and entertainment on offer.

Honey cream teas were served in the town hall and proved as popular as ever.

Secretary David Jones was particularly pleased with the amount of early visitors. This is the best year we've had for ages,' he said. 'The sun is what makes the difference. This is the most people I've ever seen at this time of day.'

The central part of the day was the honey products competition with all the entries on display in the town hall.

The competition attracted a large number of entries which were judged during the day by Mick Jordan.

David Jones said: 'This is my tenth year as secretary and that's the most honey entries I've seen.'

Among the winners was Terry West from Bathpool who won first prize in the light honey and medium honey classes.

Jo Widdicombe from Millbrook also enjoyed success taking first prize in the set honey class while Sue Malcolm from Saltash claimed two second prizes for her medium and set honey.

Further entertainment throughout the day came from the town criers' competition – which was won by Rob Tremain from Launceston – music from the South East Cornwall Accordion Group and the funfair.

Deputy portreeve Jeremy Gist said: 'The honey fair once again was very well supported and we're thankful for the superb weather. It's great to see that not only the traditional honey fair was well supported, but the other events such as those at St Mary's Church were well supported as well. The Lions have done a first class job with their organisation.'
