FOOTBALLERS and the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary have been deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the sudden death of Detective Constable John Hillson, based at Liskeard Police Station, who was also the popular assistant manager of Liskeard AFC.
It is understood that John, who was 35, died in his sleep at his home in Saltash in the early hours of Thursday morning. He leaves his partner Lisa and their infant son Callum, and two young daughters from a previous marriage. He also has two stepchildren.
Chief Supt. Bob Sturland, Area Commander for Cornwall, said in a statement to the Cornish Times: 'We are all shocked over John's death and he will be a great loss to the force. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic detective and will be sadly missed by all his colleagues. At this time our thoughts are with his family and friends'.
John, a former Coventry City apprentice, returned to the westcountry after a serious football injury. He then played in the S W League for both Liskeard and Bodmin, and was thought of as an excellent defender.
Mr Bob Bell, chairman of the S W League, said he was the secretary at Millbrook AFC when John joined as joint manager with Paul Stephens for two successful seasons. He then took on Liskeard first team as assistant manager to Chris Burchell, two years ago. 'He was gentle, quiet, very respected and knowledgeable about football' said Bob. 'He was a good friend and we had spoken on Wednesday. I am devastated for John's family'.
Chris Burchell said John had arrived late because of his work, to watch the team's match on Wednesday night in the Dunning Lawrence Charity Cup quarter finals against Porthleven. His brother Wayne is a player for Porthleven. 'He was able to speak to the team at half time and he rushed straight back to work as the game finished' he said.
Chris said he spoke to John daily on the phone about the team, and will greatly miss him. 'When we got John it was a big coup for us in non league circles. I can't pay him enough respect'.
Liskeard AFC President Nancy Rawlings said that on behalf of everyone at the club she offered their condolences to Lisa and all the family.
