TWO years of hard study has resulted in some star-studded A-level results for students across South East Cornwall. Once again the district had pass rates above the national average which this year was 98 per cent. At Callington Community College yesterday students were celebrating 100 per cent passes in every subject, with 45 per cent in the top grades of A*, A or B. The top performer, and bound for Cambridge University to read natural sciences, was Dan Garlick, who achieved three A*s in mathematics, biology and chemistry, and an A in Spanish. He also gained an A in AS further maths and an A* in the Extended Project. College principal Sean Morris said: 'I am delighted that our sixth form have achieved so well. It is great to see their delight in these outstanding results. Students have committed themselves to their academic studies and have also contributed a great deal to the life of the college and local community. Many congratulations to everyone.' At Liskeard School and Community College there was a 99 per cent pass rate, 74 per cent of which were A to C grades. Top student was Rory Livermore with A* and two As in maths, biology and chemistry and he is to study biochemistry at Exeter. The most A-levels were gained by Andy Boney, who achieved four – three As for history, maths and further maths, and a B for economics. He is to study economics at Exeter. Gill Prichard, director of the sixth form, said: 'I am delighted to see that our students have done so well, especially in the light of all the added pressures with all their exams being at the end of the year now. They have coped with all these challenges and exceeded our expectations. I am so proud of them.' Saltash.net community school also had plenty to celebrate. In keeping with previous years, the overall pass rate was almost 99 per cent. Among the top achievers were Lily Hemmett, who gained A* maths and As in further maths and business studies, and will study maths at Bath. Ollie Gilford achieved A* chemistry, A maths and A biology and will study chemistry at St Andrews. Headteacher Isobel Bryce said: 'Our young people work so hard and they deserve their many successes.' Torpoint Community College was celebrating some of its best results, with almost all of the 80 per cent of students who applied for university gaining their first choice. Kirsty McBain achieved the college's best grades, with three A*s in biology, chemistry and maths, and is heading to Bristol to study biochemistry. Matt Allen ach-ieved three As and a B in biology, maths, physics and chemistry will be going to Princeton, USA. Head of sixth form Becky Lear said: 'I feel exceptionally proud to be part of such an amazing sixth form with such wonderful students. We are a small institution and yet these students are willing to take their places on the world stage and are confident to stand head and shoulders with the best.' Among other top achievers across the colleges were: Callington – Jessica Downing, 2 A*s and an A; Natasha Carslaw, A* and 2 As; Tamsin Sandy, 2 A*s, A and B; Callum Mackellar, A*, A and 2 Bs; Henrique Whitley, A*, 2 As and C; Olivia Brown, 2 As and B; and Katie Burdon, Lisa Thomas, Georgia O'Brien all gained A*, A and B. Liskeard – Ben Johnston, Nikki Sansom, Liam Hunt and Joel Nash all gained A*, A and B grades; Ben Townsend and Lewis Boobier A* and 2 Bs; and Helen Blenkhorn 2 As and 3 Bs. Saltash – Lily Blake, 3 As; Grace Sutton, A*, A and B; and Ella Fadida and Rebecca Harrington 2 As and a B. Torpoint – Katie Hart, 3 As; Simone Steenhagen and Matt House, 2 As and B; and Ellie Jo O'Connell, A* and BB.
