A team from the stadium joined together with MPs from the county to meet with the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Matt Hancock and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch.
It came after Cornwall Council agreed to provide £3m towards the £14.3m project to build the Stadium for Cornwall which would provide a permanent home for the Cornish Pirates and Truro City Football Club as well as providing training and business facilities for Truro and Penwith College and a range of community facilities.
However the council’s funding is dependent on the Government providing another £3m towards the project. The Stadium for Cornwall is keen to get all the funding in place so work can start on the project with an aim of having the stadium ready for the 2019/20 season.
Under the plans the Pirates, Truro City and the college will each provide £2m to the project.
In a statement the Stadium for Cornwall partners, St Ives MP Derek Thomas and Cornwall Council said of the Westminster meeting: “Following the excellent news on Tuesday that Cornwall councillors have approved up to £3m for the stadium we now have a very clear understanding of the Government’s position with regard to providing the funding to complete phase one of the project after meeting Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch in Westminster.
“The secretary of state explained how Government money can be used to fund particular aspects of this community stadium for Cornwall and also made it clear that he would do what he could to ensure that we get across the line.
“In addition, the group and Cornwall Council have been offered the expertise of civil servants to maximise the opportunities of Government input and to help ensure that the full business case is completed on time; the Cornish MPs have also said that they will keep the Chancellor of the Exchequer fully informed on the progress of the project.
“The team was able to update the Government on the benefits the stadium will be able to provide in terms of opportunities for disabled sport and in providing outreach sports’ programmes for schools throughout Cornwall.
“This is a fantastic project and we firmly believe that, with the work now going on with Government, we will end up with the facility that people want – promoting health and wellbeing, providing economic benefits and offering top class sporting events at what will truly be a stadium for one and all.
“The stadium is now within touching distance after many years of hard work by a great number of people and the team pays tribute to them – without their efforts we would not have got to this exciting stage.”
