Looe's famous resident, Nelson the one eyed seal, has been put on a course of antibiotic pills by vets from the Gweek Seal Sanctuary, which he has to take morning and evening, preferably swallowed down with a nice tasty squid.
The vets were called in by harbour officials when they noticed a few days ago that Nelson was sporting a nasty looking gash across his nose, and were concerned about infection setting in. The vets also gave him a health check stating that he was in good condition for his 18 years, which one assumes is attributed to his diet of freshly caught Looe fish, which he is fed by quay workers each day. They estimated his weight at about 250 kilos.
The daunting task of getting the pills down Nelson, has mainly fallen to Harbour Master Ted Webb. At first it was decided to place the medication inside a nice fat mackerel, but unfortunately the seal likes to bite them in two and he ate the wrong half. Before it could be retrieved, the quay's other resident, Kevin the cormorant, swooped down and took the dose! In the end it was discovered that the best method was to put the pill inside a small squid, which Nelson relishes so much he swallows whole.
