  CORNWALL LEAGUE

DIVISION SIX EAST

Callington III v

St Austell IV

ST AUSTELL decided to bat first after winning the toss and secured a five-run win.

But it was Callington who made the first impression when Wilcocks claimed a wicket in his second over.

Bromley opened his innings with a flurry of boundaries and was striking the ball furiously.

He was well supported by Hunkin after two more Wilcocks' wickets, and their partnership steadily began to build momentum.

Bromley continued to crash boundaries and Hunkin was content to rotate the strike until Cosgrove managed to fine tune his bowling to have him caught. Bromley was finally removed in Wilcocks' last over, after an impressive opening spell had secured him three wickets.

He was well supported by Jefferis, who was keeping things tight at the other end. But if Callington thought the exits of Bromley and Hunkin in quick succession would bring a collapse, they were wrong.

Geeves and Cundy began to increase the run rate, with Cundy in particular attempting to flog anything to the boundary and, for the most part, succeeding. He hit 14 boundaries in his 66, often leaving the home captain scratching his head as to what to do next.

Throwing the ball to Thomas seemed to do the trick, as he removed both Cundy and Roach in the same over, after Geeves was unfortunately run out a couple of overs earlier for 29.

Wilcocks returned to finish the innings, but the damage had been done, and Coleman's quickfire 34 only rubbed salt into the wound.

A total 250 was more than Callington had expected to concede.

Callington started brightly, with Garry Emmerson hitting the usual couple of boundaries, and with the solid Borlase, Callington found they were keeping up with the run rate.

But when Emmerson was dismissed for 35, Cosgrove followed two balls later and suddenly St Austell were on top.

Borlase was still going strong at the other end and continued to defy the bowlers as he pushed his score passed his second 50 of the season.

His singles were keeping the score ticking over, but boundaries were soon needed and A Emmerson began to open his shoulders but was bowled attempting to hit another six. However, his 38 had helped the cause. But the killer blow was losing Borlase for an excellent 70, after he had batted for just over 40 overs. Hopes of winning had relied on him batting all the way through.

Wilcocks and Neville attempted to boost the run rate with some big hits, but when D Emmerson came in with 35 needed off five overs, things looked impossible.

With a couple of agricultural slogs Emmerson got things close, but even hitting 20 off the penultimate over was not enough, with Geeves claiming four wickets in a tight eight-over spell. Coleman and Roach also bowled tightly to finish with two wickets each.

Sr Austell 250 (J Bromley 40, M Cundy 66, J Wilcocks 4-54, O Thomas 2-23), Callington 245-9 (K Borlase 70, G Emmerson 35, A Emmerson 38, D Emmerson 30no). St Austell (19) beat Callington (10) by five runs.
