WITH reference to Armand Toms' letter (29.09.06) concerning speed limits, I am usually in agreement with Mr Toms on many subjects and I am eagerly awaiting the outcome on his work concerning the indiscriminate parking by local workers and visitors in the residential areas which causes so much congestion. However I must take issue with his suggestion that a 40mph speed limit be imposed in the rural area from Nomansland all the way to Barclay House, a distance of well over two miles. In my opinion this is nothing short of ridiculous, the 272nd and 97th accident blackspots in the county are of concern but hardly major blackspots. If this proposal goes ahead it will cause more congestion but the real danger is that we already have people driving along this stretch of road at 25mph and to add even more slow-moving traffic will force many to attempt overtaking manoeuvres to get clear and probably cause more accidents. The overwhelming danger on this road is poor visibility – overgrown trees and hedges. With the exception of the tree hugging and twitter brigades, I am sure that the vast majority would rather have a few less birds and a couple of beheaded flowers instead of serious injuries and deaths.
