AN eight year old from Liskeard was both shocked and elated when she received potentially one of the last correspondences to be sent on behalf of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Emelia of Liskeard had all but given up on a reply to her letter sent after the Jubilee weekend, as she understood the late Queen was a very busy lady.

However, just days after the Queen’s passing Emelia was handed a very special envelope.

Telling the story, her grandmother Jenny Habbeshaw, also of Liskeard, said: “After our street Jubilee celebrations earlier this year, my eight year old grand-daughter Emelia said that she was going to write a letter to the Queen to say a big thank you for being our Queen,  for all the work she has done and for being such a lovely lady.

“This she did and showed me when she had finished. She had used a torn out page from a notebook and included some drawings of Jubilee flags etc. It was brilliant, all her own work with no adult help, so we put it in an envelope which she addressed to Buckingham Palace.

“I did mention to her at the time that maybe she would get a reply but not to get too excited as the Queen is a very busy lady.

“During the following few weeks the family home was sold and Emelia moved in temporarily with me.

“I thought that she had forgotten about her letter until she was told of the sad passing of Her Majesty. Emelia was very sad and she said ‘I suppose now I will never get a letter from her’.”

However, as luck would have it Emelia’s mother made a return trip to their old house that very week and discovered something special on the mat.

Jenny continued: “On the Friday my daughter, Emelia’s mother returned to their old house only to find, low and behold, a letter from Buckingham Palace. Emelia had not mentioned her surname in the letter to the Queen so it had not been redirected.”

She added: “Emelia is over the moon. The envelope was franked with the Buckingham Palace details, whilst the letter head is Balmoral Castle, and written by the Queen’s Lady in Waiting.  Extra special I think as one of the last correspondences from Her Majesty.”
