The match was a personal triumph for Ian Hodges (Helston) who marked his long-awaited debut with four goals. Hodges was only in the starting line-up as a replacement for Andy Morris, who was playing for Falmouth in the FA Vase. After 21 minutes, the impressive Kevin Robinson (Torpoint), also playing his first game, combined well with Danny Nancarrow (St Austell) to set up Mark Vercesi (Penzance) for Cornwall's first. Hodges confidently made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after the referee generously adjudged that Steve Winnan (Falmouth) had been pushed.
With two minutes remaining in the first half, Nancarrow showed great skill on the ball before squaring a perfectly weighted pass into Hodges' path for the striker to score Cornwall's third.
The second half started tamely as Cornwall took their foot off the pedal, before Nancarrow made it 4-0 on 67 minutes, taking advantage of a kindly bounce before dispatching a powerful shot into the corner of the net.
Hodges completed his hat trick with the best goal of the game. Mark Penpraze (Saltash) curled in a beautifully struck free kick from the right touchline, which Hodges only had to re-direct with his head. Somerset then burst into life with goals in a minute as the Cornish defence lost their concentration. Cornwall Youth Manager, Kevin Rowett, said after the game "Three wins in three games puts us in a very strong position. I said we needed to win our home games and we've done that".
"I sincerely hope that we can sustain the same sort of performance on Saturday at Liskeard, when we play Wiltshire in the SW Counties Cup".
