Defending champions Cornwall, made a successful start to this season's campaign by overcoming local rivals Devon at Bickland Park, Falmouth.

Andy Morris (Falmouth) gave Cornwall the perfect start when he capitalised on a mix-up between Devon goalkeeper James Handley (Bodmin) and one of his defenders to score after just three minutes. A 20-yard effort from Steve Winnan (Falmouth), which Handley tipped around the post, and a glancing header by skipper Phil Smith (St Austell), representing the only real chances of adding to their tally in the first half, despite controlling the game for long periods.

After the break, Danny Nancarrow (St Austell) failed to convert two excellent chances created by Morris and Winnan, before substitute Wayne Riley (St Austell) had a fierce shot beaten away by Handley. Winnan finally eased the Duchy's nerves on 90 minutes, when he curled the ball under the body of the advancing Handley to score an excellent goal. Cornwall Youth Manager, Kevin Rowett, said after the game "This was not the most inspiring game I've seen but I'm very pleased that we've started with a win- we need to win our home games in this group".
