Polperro......................................8
St Columb Major.....................4
ALTHOUGH able to at last field a full strength side, Polperro found themselves a goal down after just four minutes to a well worked St Columb move. Polperro responded well and equalised with an in-swinging corner from Kevin Faulkner that deceived the St Columb keeper.
Shortly after this Polperro took the lead when Stuart Fisher "ghosted" in at the far post to nudge the ball home. St Columb replied almost immediately with a well taken goal and a similar move five minutes later resulted in St Columb taking a deserved lead 3-2.
Polperro rallied again and another superbly flighted corner kick from Kevin Faulkner found the back of the net to level the score once more. With play moving swiftly from end to end in a very open game, it was Polperro's turn to go into the lead after a superb strike by defender Kevin Southern from the edge of the box allowing the home side to go in at half time 4-3 ahead.
In the second half Polperro increased the pressure and were rewarded with goals from Phil Bane, Jason Richardson, Barry Crane and Kevin Faulkner scored a well earned hat-trick with a smartly taken spot kick.
Although the score may suggest otherwise, St Columb were never out of the match, and were unlucky not to score more goals themselves, but they did save the best till last when St Columb were awarded a free kick 25 yards out which was truly thundered into the net for the goal of the match.
Excellent performances by Dave Gilbert, Nick Southern and Kevin Faulkner enabled Polperro to run out comfortable 8-4 winners. The whole match was free flowing game made possible by a fine performance from referee Gary Davies. Man of the Match Kevin Faulkner.
Berties............................................0
Dobwalls....................................14
THE premier league side dominated their division four counterparts who have just joined the league.
Starting with only ten men the home side held their own for the opening ten minutes until Robin Cole found the target. The scores remained the same until the half hour point when the Berties late arrival stamped his mark on the game giving away two penalties in the space of five minutes. Johnny Niblett dispatched both to extend the lead. A superb left footed chip by Andros Andreas and a Martin Polatch solo effort made it 5-0 at the interval.
After the restart Dobwalls put pressure on the Berties goal but couldn't score, it took until the sixty fifth minute to break the gutsy defence down.
The last twenty five minutes produced a nine goal avalanche with Martin Polatch and Robin Cole scoring a further goals a piece to make their individual tally of four each. Johnny Niblett completed his hat trick and club reserve goalkeeper Nick Carpenter came on to score two excellent finishes.
To their credit Berties tried hard although being dominated throughout and can thank the goalkeeper who made a string of fine saves to keep the score down to the level that it ended at.
Dobwalls Man of the Match went to Johnny Niblett although it was difficult to judge on such an easy game which resembled a training session at times.
Tideford..........................................6
Nanstallon....................................1
NANSTALLON were probably taken by surprise in this Junior Cup encounter. Doing well in Division Four and playing a team from only one division above, they must have thought they were in with a chance.
Unfortunately for them they met a Tideford team that turned in an excellent display of football on the day, with all departments performing to their best. Perhaps some credit for this should got to Chairman Stewart Masters who had prepared the ground to its usual high standard, and with this being the first time Tideford have been at home this season, the team revelled in it. Having said that, it is usually the case that visiting teams play out of their skins once on the billiard table surface.
The home side were four nil up at the break following strikes from John Williams (2), Colin Eustace and Dan Taylor, who would have had a hat-trick by half time if he had taken his chances. At the other end Nanstallon created a few opportunities, but that came to nothing.
As often happens when teams are in a comfortable position, Tideford had difficulty in maintaining the pace in the second period. With the visitors showing far more commitment, the home goal mouth was very busy, including three corners in quick succession which Tideford were panicked into conceding when they could not get the ball way.
They survived the ten-minute onslaught however, coming back into the game, and were greatly relieved when Glen Tookey notched the fifth. Nanstallon then took advantage of a penalty award following a trip in the box only for Wayne Kirby to cancel it out with a Tideford penalty at the other end following a handball. John Williams was given the chance of his hat trick when another penalty was awarded, but he tried placing rather than whacking it and the keeper was able to make a save.
Six one was the final result, but taking into account the missed chances in the first period and stout defending by the visitors when Tideford were back en-song in the dying minutes, the home side could have hit ten.
PADSTOW.........................................1
CALLINGTON TOWN....................3
CALLINGTON made the long trip down to Padstow and got their Cornwall Junior Cup campaign off to a flying start. Callington played into a strong wind in the first period and took control straight form the first whistle.
Playing some good football forcing Padstow to defend for long spells. Callington found the home keeper to be in tremendous form. First Taylor had a 14 yard shot tipped over the bar, Chris Truscott had a header saved in the bottom corner and minutes later saved well with a point blank again from Truscott.
Padstow very rarely got out of their half in the first period, but must have been happy to reach the break at half time 0-0.
The second half started in the same manor, again with Callington dominating for long periods, but they failed to beat the Padstow keeper and in a rare break the home side took the lead when a timid 20 yard drive went underneath the town keeper.
With15 minutes left on the clock Padstow must have thought they were going to upset last season's finalists, but Callington kept their shape and continued to play the best football. It was always going to be a matter of time before they penetrated the Padstow defence. Then Chris Gerry made a darting run into the box and was upended. A penalty was awarded and up stepped Griffith who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Within a minute of the restart a through ball from Striplin found Truscott who lobbed the keeper 18 yards, and two minutes later Truscott wrapped the tie up with a thunderous shot from 20 yards which safely saw Callington into the next round. Star man - Scott Fisher.
St Stephen......................................4
St Dominic......................................1
THIS Junior Cup clash between two sides both having made good starts to their season was always going to be entertaining. St Stephen were top of Duchy Premier and St Dominic previously undefeated.
St Dominic started strongly and within 15 minutes took the lead, as good work by Chris Wood was finished off by Neal Horsley. For the next 20 minutes St Dominic dominated going close on a couple of occasions. But St Stephen weathered the storm and Trevithick in the Saints goal became very busy. He made three outstanding saves before finally being beaten just before half time.
The half time score of 1-1 was a fair reflection, but the league leaders raised the tempo and five minutes into the second half took the lead with a deflected shot that completely wrong footed Trevithick.
St Stephen were now well on top and after 60 minutes they went further ahead as St Dominic's defence failed to clear a corner and Hooper prodded home from close range via the goalkeeper
St Dominic did not give up, they made a bold attempt by bringing on an extra forward, and went close twice by Horsley and Snowden after more good work by Chris Wood.
It was to no avail as St Stephen sealed victory with a fourth goal from Man of the Match Hooper.
This was not as bad a result as it seems for St Dominic as for long periods they were well in the game, with Chris Howie and Darren Bradley working extremely hard in midfield.
Gunnislake................................. ..8
St Cleer...........................................1
GUNNISLAKE started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead on 15 minutes. Danny Stevens played in Lee Underwood who produced a superb 20 yard strike. Shortly afterwards Steve Gaggini stooped to head home a Joe Pulley corner.
St Cleer reduced the deficit before Andy Wakam won his team a penalty which Underwood converted.
In the opening moments of the second half, Gunnislake effectively clinched the victory when Wakam turned in a Pulley centre to extend the lead to 4-1. James Ord headed home number five, Pulley was again the provider. Waken added another but it was Underwood who was leading the way as he scored twice more to make it four in the game for him personally.
Pensilva.......................................7
St Giles........................................ 0
PENSILVA entertained St Giles in the first round of the Junior Cup on a dry Saturday afternoon. Pensilva's first goal came from Colin Wilson after Warden whipped in an excellent cross.
Colin Wilson set up the second, pulling it back from the corner kick to allow Collins to add to the tally. Pensilva saw threatening runs from the St Giles side but it was Colin Wilson who added himself to the score sheet again just before half time.
Matt Hogan's team talk consisted of "come on men, let's turn this into a cricket score" and it was on that note that Tucky went out and coolly slotted the fourth past the St Giles goalkeeper.
Darren Warden increased the score line by beating the offside trap and calmly lifting the ball over the keeper and ten minutes later Colin Treeby cheekily scored from his own corner kick.
The final goal of the game was a duo from the two Rendle brothers - Jeremy made a threatening run down the right flank, only to swing in a Beckham style cross that Mike guided into the top right hand corner with his head.
