St Columb Minor........................2

Callington Town......................5

CALLINGTON took too much time to get into this Premier League game but did create the best of the chances in the opening 20 minutes. Chris Truscott went close on two occasions before having a goal disallowed, but five minutes later made no mistake following a through ball from Griffith.

Before Callington had time to settle St Columb were back in this game at 1-1. But from that point it was all about Callington, as they started to get into top gear and tear into the St Columb defence. They were back in front following a long kick from Rowlings in the Town goal which fell to Truscott and again he made no mistake. A few minutes later Truscott had the ball in the back of the net, but after a long dispute with the linesman the goal was disallowed.

Worst was to follow as St Columb went straight up the other end and scored from a disputed penalty.

With half time approaching Callington went back into the lead again, Truscott grabbing a well deserved hat trick.

In the second period Callington raised their game with young Taylor running riot down the right hand side, and Griffith spraying around the ball for fun at times. It was not long before Callington increased their lead. Following a great ball from Taylor and that man Truscott was on hand to make it four.

Fisher then brought out a fine save from the home keeper. Griffith struck the cross bar and Taylor hit the post. Before Truscott grabbed his fifth - the best of the match. Taylor's perfect cross was meet by the head of Truscott who rapped the game up. Star man was Chris Truscott.

Godolphin.......................................2

Dobwalls.........................................1

THE game was played at a furious pace and was very competitive, with play moving from end to end.

Both sides created chances but neither could make a breakthrough until the 40th minute when the home side went ahead when an attacker lost his marker to head home.

From the restart a long throw by Gary Isbell was flicked on by Simon Dann for Martin Polatch to level the scores.

With the advantage of the slope Dobwalls pressed forward in the second half and created a number of chances. The home 'keeper made a string of point blank saves to deny the visitors.

Dobwalls were awarded a penalty when Martin Polatch was felled in the box. The penalty was taken by Rob Cole who was again thwarted when the keeper guessed right to pull off a fine save on the stroke of ninety minutes. Polatch saw his goal bound shot cleared off the line which rebounded to Tony Rogers who sliced his effort wide from close range.

A draw looked on the cards until well into injury time when Dobwalls conceded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. The ball was chipped over the wall and found the corner of the net. There was only enough time to restart before the final whistle came. For Dobwalls a number of players battled hard all afternoon, but the Man of the Match award went to skipper Robin Cole for his determined contribution.

St Dominic.......................................1

Biscovey...........................................1

ST Dominic started this Premier encounter against the reigning champions having won both their opening league matches, but knew that this would be the ultimate test.

The first half was entertaining without too much goalmouth action, as both defensives were rock solid. Biscovery probably had slightly more possession but St Dominic had the better chance in the opening half hour from a powerful header by captain Oli Cradick.

The deadlock was broken just before the break when a long throw was not cleared and Andy Snowdon scored with an angled drive.

The second half saw Biscovey up the tempo, but found the St Dominic backline of Ford, Cradick, Wenmoth and Allmett very difficult to breakdown. However a long kick out by the Biscovery keeper eluded everyone and Nick Isbell was on hand to shoot low past Trevithick.

The rest of the game was very even, both sides had chances, the best of which saw Chris Wood strike a post when put in by a left through ball by Horsley. Both sides could have won the game but both defences held out and a draw was a fair result.

Man of the match for St Dominic could have been anyone as every performance was very hard working, but must go to Gareth Wenmoth who was outstanding.

Timmo turns tide

Pensilva...........................................3

Nanpean............................................1

PENSILVA continued their winning streak although the quality of the football wasn't as impressive as previous weeks. Never quite getting out of first gear. Several early chances were spawned and it was some shocking defending that saw Nanpean take the lead on 25 minutes. However, Pens reply came quickly when Colin Wilson turned a defender inside out and guided the ball past the keeper with his left foot.

The second half was looking like a formality for both sides until substitute Stuart Timms came on. One of the few good spells of football left Timms running free down Pens right-hand side and he was able to provide a low accurate cross for Darren Worden to tap in.

Timms then got his own reward by scoring Pens third. A long pass found him on the corner of the penalty area where he controlled and fired the ball past the full back and underneath the keeper. Rob Swinburne 'Man of the Match' for a solid debut performance.

Stoke Climsland........................3

Polperro.........................................3

WHEN these two sides took to the field on a warm, sunny afternoon, few could have foreseen how the next 90 minutes would unfold.

In a lively first 20 minutes both sides probed the others defences with Polperro the first to show, with efforts from Simon Fisher and Jason Richardson going close. However Climsland were first on the score sheet when a long ball caught the Polperro defence square and a home forward ran through to make the score 1-0 to Stoke Climsland.

For the remainder of the first half the only danger to Polperro keeper Barry Collins, was a touch of sunstroke as the Polperro team laid siege to the Climsland goal.

Time after time the Polperro side peppered the Climsland goal. Eventually, the pressure told and a swift move down the left saw the ball pulled back for Andy Garner to slam in two minutes from half time.

Straight from the re-start Polperro went on the attack but once again the home defence remained solid with their goalkeeper pulling off a string of fine saves. At this point one felt that Polperro must score but Climsland had other ideas and using their long ball game to good effect, released one of their forwards, who cut in from the right and was unceremoniously upended in the box..penalty.. 2-1 to Stoke Climsland.

Undeterred by this minor set-back. Polperro again drove forwards and with Dave Gilbert and Kevin Faulkner controlling centre midfield, it seemed an equaliser must surely come but alas it was not to be, because totally against the run of play and with Polperro pressing hard a Climsland bread-away saw them increase their lead to 3-1 with less than twenty minutes to go.

Many teams at this point would have hung their heads and accepted their fate but this Polperro side is made of sterner stuff and right from the whistle attacked the now packed Climsland defence. First Simon Fisher (twice) then Kevin Faulkner and Jason Richardson all had great efforts rebound off the woodwork, Andy Garner headed just over and just when it seemed nothing would go their way, up stepped Kevin Faulkner, who cleverly jinked his way around three desperate challenges to slot the ball home, 3-2 with five minutes left. It was now a real cup-tie atmosphere and then another body blow was dealt to Polperro with the dismissal of Andy Garner 3-2 down, two minutes left and down to ten men, could they do it, surely not!

Again Polperro attacked, defender Nick Southern was pushed up to lend weight to the assault, more shots rained in on the Climsland goal, the ball was blocked, it bounced clear and there was Jason Richardson, free from his marker to side foot the ball into the corner to level the scores at 3-3, Phew!!

Full marks to both sides for producing a game full of incident and good football, and a special mention for the Stoke Climsland keeper who had an outstanding game. Man of the match..Andy Giles.

Division Two

Improved St Cleer

performance

St Cleer............................................2

Godolphin.......................................1

SAINTS entertained Godolphin one of their promotion rivals from the previous season at the Sports Field and after the previous week's reversal at the hands of Altarnun were looking to bounce back with a good performance. Although patchy at times St Cleer worked hard to gain all three points.

Starting off nervously, Saints worked their way into this game concentrating on doing the simple things well, and gradually gained the upper had pushing the visitors back and creating half chances without managing to apply the final touch, and it wasn't until five minutes from the break that a run and cross from Harvey was knocked in to the path of Shepherd by Collins for the former to smash the ball home, Chances had been created at both ends in the opening half but of the keepers Roberts was the least employed.

The second half soon settled down into a pattern of breakaways from the home team constantly catching Godolphin at the back, but chances came and went. The closest of which came when Harvey chipped the keeper from a long way out only to see his effort rebound off the post. Collins finally calmed home nerves when a pass from Harvey was efficiently despatched by Collins passed the oncoming keeper.

Godolphin got on the scoresheet late in injury time when a through ball gave Runnee the chance to pull one back, to give the game a final scoreline of 2-1, Saints the three points, and a much better performance than the week before.

Division Four (East)

Caers puts Pens on victory road

Delabole Res............................... 0

Pensilva Res..................................6

ON a super day for football, Pensilva got their act together against a competitive Delabole side. The first goal game from a 'trademark' weaving run by Lee Caers. The second came shortly afterwards. A defence splitting pass from Paul Kent, put through the mercurial Ian Harris, whose long drive across the box found the far corner of the net.

Quick thinking at a short corner brought the third goal. Mike Rendle converting from a drive into the box by man of the match Colin Treeby.

Number four came just before half time, Ian Harris was brought down in the box and Paul Kent converted from the penalty.

The second half was up hill and against the win for 'Pens' but their defence of Wright, Coombes, Kent and S Welch held firm. Keeper Martin Mote made two excellent saves to keep out a pressing Delabole attack. Playing the short ball, Pensilva controlled the match. A blend of youth and experience gives 'The Blues' a good balanced look.

The young attack finished off Delabole in the second half. Staying on his feet, new signing Mike Rendle notched his second of the afternoon. Colin Treeby finished the day off with a long drive at the near post.

It was the first team's third consecutive win.

Mary Tavy.......................................5

Callington Res...........................4

FOR the second time this season Callington squandered a 3-1 lead, but they can take heart form their performance at the fact that they created more chances than their opponents.

They will take on a more settled side in the next three to four weeks and will be even more difficult to beat. Scoring goals is not a problem but they need to get their defence settled before they can make any advance on the leaders.

Andy Shorten opened his account on his return to the side but it was left to defenders to increase the lead after Mary Tavy had drawn level. Simon Paynter racing through and firing home from just inside the penalty area, and then Mike Vanstone fired home a thunderous free kick. Callington then let Mary Tavy back into the game and indeed let them take the lead at 4-3. Kev Blatchford put Callington level, after missing couple of one on one situations and really Callington should have tied it up and that stage but they like to play with a 'gung ho' spirit and on this occasion it caught them out as Mary Tavy got the all important fifth goal and the tree points.

Division Three

Saints still

unbeaten

ST STEPHENS BOROUGH...............2

LANIVET.............................................2

ST Stephens came from behind to preserve their unbeaten record last Saturday. Lanivet capitalised on a good start when Spencer Hassell gave them an early lead. Stung by this reverse Borough gradually fought their way back. After Aaron West had spurned a good opportunity to equalise they got the goal they probable deserved when the dangerous Paul Stoneman forced the ball passed the Lanivet goalkeeper to tie the scores at the interval.

The second half was a tale of two goalkeepers as Borough upped the tempo and took the game to Lanivet.

The Lanivet goalkeeper was kept fully occupied throughout the 45 minutes, pulling off a string of fine saves to thwart the Borough strikers. In contrast Gary Homer in the Borough goal was a virtual spectator throughout the half, no more so when, with time running out, he watched a hopeful cross from Lanivet's Jason Searle float gently into the Borough penalty area, sail slowly over his head and nestle quietly in the back of the net to give the away side a late lead. There will be an extra cabbage on Gary's fruit and veg stall this week!

Borough threw caution to the win and were rewarded when Kevin Fredrick played the ball through to debutante Dave South whose shot finally broke the resistance of the Lanivet goalie and gave Borough a share of the points.

Whilst this may look like two points lost at home, given the calibre of the opposition, in the end it was a point gained and Borough still remain unbeaten.

This game will have shown the Borough youngsters that they won't win every game easily and they will have learnt from this. After giving him some stick in the last two reports, this match report will be a Phi Screech free zone. Rather like the game itself actually...
