After more than half a century the chairman of the Royal Cornwall Show’s pigeon section is to retire.
This year’s show will be the last in an organisational capacity for John Robilliard, from Bodmin, whose connection with the pigeon fancy at Cornwall’s largest annual event began 70 years ago.
John has decided it’s time to hand the reins over to the next generation after his incredible stint at the helm.
‘It has been a very difficult decision to make as I have enjoyed being involved in this great show,’ he said.
‘I became involved as part of the committee when the event was held in Bodmin in 1948.
‘I eventually joined the committee in 1969, became secretary in 1970 and following the death of the chairman at the time, Charlie Warne, I was asked to become chairman in 1976 and have been ever since.’
Alongside his commitments at the Royal Cornwall he spent 24 years on Royal Pigeon Racing Association committee and served as its National President at one stage.
As well a long career as an administrator, 86 year-old John has also been a keen competitor both in showing and racing. He still keeps pigeons today, although he gave up racing 15 years ago.
The pigeon section will be in good hands with Ron Williams stepping up to the role of chairman ahead of next year’s show.
Christopher Riddle, secretary of the Royal Cornwall Show said: ‘It’s an astonishing record and we thank John wholeheartedly for his loyal service to the show for 51 years.’
This year’s Royal Cornwall Show takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
