Two shops suffered water damage after part of their roofs collapsed during torrential rain. The British Red Cross shop on Fore Street, Liskeard, and The Warehouse, an independent shop next door, suffered damage when water leaked through the ceilings during a downpour on Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the charity shop and helped move stock and electrical appliances to make the area safe.

Red Cross retail field manager Teresa Patton said: 'The leak caused some ceiling tiles to fall down and volunteers acted swiftly to close the shop as soon as they identified a problem to protect the safety of volunteers and customers. The Red Cross would like to thank the fire service for attending and minimising damage to equipment.'

A worker at The Warehouse, which doesn't open on Wednesdays, was told by a trader water was pouring into the closed shop.

Rosemary Bowen, who let firefighters into the shop to make it safe, said: 'Upstairs the water has damaged a lot of stock. The water was pouring down. It knocked the window display over and the water had flowed to the end of the shop.'

Nobody was injured during the incident.
