TREWIDLAND School, which has only 50 pupils, has topped the league table as the best performer in all Cornish schools at primary level.

South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray visited the school on Wednesday to offer her congratulations, and to present the pupils who were responsible for the achievement, with their SATs certificates. They are now pupils at Liskeard School and Community College.

All pupils from the school passed the SATs test, set at aged 11, at level 4 or above, which is the national target, and a majority scored at level 5 in both maths and English.

Chair of governors Charles Boney said: 'This is a marvellous achievement.

'The pupils and their teachers deserve the highest praise for putting Trewidland on the map. We have proved that small schools can achieve the best results.'

The school received high praise from many parents which was highlighted in its most recent Ofsted report. The report said in response to a questionnaire parents had indicated a high level of satisfaction with the school and that, together with carers, they value the family nature and friendly ethos of the school.

Many commented that their children are well cared for and happy. They commented for example: 'Every child is valued, encouraged and happy.'
