Callington community college has received a welcome grant of £42,992 from the New Opportunities Fund.

A grant total of £10,254,828 has been announced to benefit pupils at 625 schools across the UK through out of hours learning projects.

The award was announced by Baroness Pitkeathley, Chair of the New Opportunities Fund, which distributes National Lottery money to heath, education and environment projects.

Baroness Pitkeathley stated: 'The grants will make a significant impact on the lives of young people. The projects take a stimulating and often innovative approach to developing the interests, talents and self esteem of young people.'

Callington Community College will be using its £42,992 grant to enhance out of school clubs and the homework support provision.

Activities will include a formal homework club, a support club for special educational needs pupils, a revision club, lunchtime and breakfast clubs.

Headteacher Steve Kenning said: 'We are delighted at the grant. The money will help to support the development of the after college clubs and extension studies. We are hoping to provide a club for one night a week at a primary school, possibly Delaware, so that students can complete their computer work. The grant will help us to pay for staffing of the primary school during that time.' Picture: Jill Long.
