Bodmin Tn 1

Saltash Utd 3

A John Scholes hat-trick enabled the Ashes to not only win this match, but leapfrog

Torpoint Athletic and Launceston to go top of the League.

Saltash manager Martin Burgess was delighted with the way the weekend's results went in his team's favour, admitting: 'We didn't expect to be where we are but, if we keep on winning, we will be in the shout at the end of the season.'

The victory also stretched the Ashes' record to nine games without defeat.

The visitors got off to the perfect start when Scholes pounced within a minute of the start to give his team the lead during a goalmouth melee.

A mistake by Ashes' goalkeeper Andy Barnes gifted Bodmin an equaliser through Ross Welsh, but Scholes restored the visitors' lead when he drilled the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Scholes sealed the victory with his hat-trick goal in the second period with a great strike from outside the penalty area.

Bodmin retaliated with a Kevin Kingdom header, which was cleared off the line, but the Ashes held on to complete the double.
