County Division One Callington v Perranarworthal CALLINGTON'S strong run of form continued on Sunday in this re-arranged fixture against a struggling Perran side. Having been invited to bat, Callington lost John Parsons in the eighth over, but Reece Curwen and Dan Davis took the score up to 60, when Davis offered an easy chance to Angell off the bowling of Tom Williams, just as the County man was looking to break loose. Another 20 was added when Curwen was out for 37, but then the partnership of the day began to take shape between Andy Shorten and Peter Tancock. They put together a stand of 107, despite Perran skipper Adrian Moore – who could only bowl seven overs himself due to a groin strain – juggling his bowlers. Tancock made a fine 67 from 57 balls, including six fours and three sixes. Shorten weighed in with 55 from 69 balls in a knock that included nine fours. A cameo innings of 22 from Jim Shorten at the end took Callington up to 236 for eight, which was their largest total of the season to date. All the Perran bowlers proved expensive, with ex- Truro man Carl Murphy taking three for 51 and Williams three for 71 from their 12-over spells. In reality, Perran were never likely to chase such a large total, but Bose and Brighouse got them off to a steady start, with the Callington bowlers a little wayward at times and bowling the odd wide in an effort to generate that extra yard of pace. They had to wait until the 17th over for the first wicket, when Brighouse lobbed a gift to Andy Shorten off the bowling of Chris Bennett. When Jim Shorten turned to the skills of Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Sanjaya Rajapakse, the wickets were always likely to fall, and that was the case. By now, Dan Davis was turning his arm over for the first time since his ankle injury and he took two wickets, but it was Rajapakse, with four for 16 from his 12 overs, that put the brakes on the Perran reply. Bose hung around until the 32nd over for his 48, but no other Perran batsman could reach double figures. Shorten returned to snap up a couple of tailenders as Perran were dismissed for 111 to put Callington at the top of the league, although Camborne have a game in hand.
