Sixty years of marriage
A COUPLE who lived and were married in Sunderland celebrated their diamond wedding on Monday.
Norman and Hannah Harrison celebrated their anniversary at the Brunel Inn, Saltash, with many friends from the organisations they are involved in.
Norman, 81, left school at 19 to attend Loughborough University to study handicrafts. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and became an observer in the Fleet Air Arm in Scotland and in the Far East.
After the war he took several teaching jobs and was also an instructor in the Royal Navy. He retired in 1982.
Hannah, 81, left school at 16 to attend commercial college becoming a shorthand typist for a building society and later in a timber merchants office.
In Saltash, Norman is a former Conservative association chairman, former secretary of Saltash regatta committee and former secretary of Kenwanne youth club. He was also a founder member of the Probus club. Hannah has been in the WRVS and the SMILES organisation. Both are members of the First Forum and were keen badminton players.
The couple have three children, Maureen Smith, Diana Harrison and David Harrison, and have three grandsons who were all at the celebrations.
A cake was given to the couple with the sword Norman had in the Royal Navy. He then paid his wife the 15 shillings he owed her for their special wedding licence.
