Boost for jubilee funds
SALT(B)ASH organised a quiz evening at the Rodney Inn on Friday to raise money for the Saltash Jubilee celebrations in June.
A total of 17 teams took part and the questionmaster was Simon Couch, who read out 10 rounds with subjects ranging from geography to saints and sinners and Cornwall.
The winning team was Bass Instincts, which was made up of Kirsten and Colin Riches and Carol and Trevor Arroll. Second were the Tea Bags and third were the Union Gap.
Mona Tomaszewska-Honywill, vice-chairman of the Jubilee committee, gave the vote of thanks, with special mention to Barbara Dyer and the helpers.
A total of £150 was raised for the Jubilee celebrations.
Crime down by
nearly quarter
CRIME figures in Saltash are decreasing overall with a 24.7 per cent drop in the period April 1, 2001, to December 31, 2001.
However, there has been an increase in commercial and shed burglaries with a rise from 54 in 2000 to 72 in 2001.
Sgt Gary Neeves said: 'We are very happy that there has been a reduction in crime overall, but we are targeting places where it has increased and hope to make a difference there.'
Police are advising residents to keep a close eye on valuables and to make sure they are property-marked and kept in a secure place.
As many of the items stolen are large and heavy, be on the look out for any unfamiliar vans in the area, which may be used to move the machinery. Anyone concerned about a van, can contact the police to allow them to check out the van.
Thieves from Plymouth have been known to target the area, and so police are stepping up interceptions on the bridge to stop any future offenders.
The Christmas and New Year period was very successful and quiet in Saltash, a fact Sgt Neeves puts down to the high visibility of police in the town and the local 'Pub Watch' scheme, which sees local pubs communicating between each other about barred customers.
Police also want to again advise car drivers to remove car stereo fronts from their vehicles. There has been a slight increase in thefts of these fronts recently and any should be removed for security reasons.
Sgt Neeves added: 'We are aware that many crimes do not go reported and urge residents to come forward in the future.'
