Saltash couple celebrate

diamond wedding

A COUPLE who spent all their working lives farming, have celebrated their diamond wedding at their home in Saltash.

Kenneth and Gwendoline Dolley both came from farming families and met when attending St Sampson's Church at South Hill.

Born at Pillaton, Kenneth, 88, attended the local school until he was 14, and then worked on his father's farm until his marriage to Gwendoline.

He then became a tenant farmer at St Ive and continued farming until 12 years ago when ill health caused him to retire and the couple came to live in Saltash. Gwendoline, 86, was born at South Hill and left school at 14 to work on her parents' farm. She also sang in the choir at South Hill church, where they were married.

On their wedding day, they did not have a photographer, but a friend offered to take them.

Unfortunately, none of the pictures came out.

For their honeymoon, they went to Newquay by train, and on stepping on to the platform, the air raid siren sounded.

The couple have one son, Philip, who is married and lives at St Ive, and have three grandchildren.

On Saturday their eldest grandaughter, Helen, is to be married at St Ive.
