Posting for
Christmas
THE 2nd Saltash scout group, with the help of their parents, are offering a Christmas postal service for Saltash town addresses only.
The group's postal boxes are in six shops around the town, at Piglets; Saltash Radio; Tamar Cards in Fore Street; Charlie's Celebration Cakes in Callington Road; Spar shop at Mote Park; and Hodge News in Church Road.
The service will be l0p a card and will run until December 15, closing at 4pm. This will give the Scout group time to sort the cards and make their deliveries on Saturday and Sunday, and the week running up to Christmas. Last year's fund-raiser made £486 towards their headquarters.
Pub appeal
is dismissed
AN appeal against a Caradon council decision to refuse a plan for a public house at Carkeel has been dismissed by a government inspector.
The plan, by W J Richards, was for a public house on a site to the north side of the A388 road and a little to the west of the village of Carkeel.
The inspector noted the site lies outside the defined development limit of Carkeel and considered it would intrude into the landscape and be apparent from the A388. Due to its elevated position it was also thought it would be likely to be conspicuous from Botus Fleming and a number of other vantage points, and it was feared vehicles stopping, slowing and turning there would interfere with movement of traffic.
Church
bazaars
ST Stephen-by-Saltash church bazaar raised a total of £1,211 in November for church renovation funds.
Last Saturday, St Nicholas and St Faith church bazaar raised £1,200 for their church funds while the recent gift day added a further £1,220.
Stalls at
SHADO
SALTASH Festival Committee held their last event for the year with a bazaar at the SHADO centre when various stalls were manned by local organisations.
The committee also had its own stall. It is uncertain whether the committee will continue as originally formed - to organise events for three years. The matter will be decided in the New Year.
Band and choir
in concert
A CHRISTMAS programme of music was presented at Saltash Wesley church on Saturday evening by Saltash town band, directed by David Dobson, and Saltash male voice choir directed by David Lodge and accompanied by Jennie Shepley on piano.
Comere was Julie Skantlebury of Carlton Television. John Honywill, chairman of the band, welcomed the mayor and mayoress of Saltash, Bryan Preston and Jennifer Preston. Giving the vote of thanks, the mayor said he had enjoyed the concert and felt a town band bound the town together as a community. The Christmas theme was interspersed with carols sung by the audience, and there was a lively finish with the band playing 'The Snow Waltz'. The choir sang melodies such as 'The Snowman', 'Christmas Calypso' and many others. Band members, Paul Fulcher and Andrew Knight, both 11, presented Julie Skantlebery with flowers and a gift.
