church funds

A SELECTION of vocal styles, violin and organ solos, and comedy, are being presented by Mixed Company at Saltash Wesley church on November 25 at 7.30pm in a presentation entitled 'Allsorts'.

Instrumental music will be led by church organist Philip Taylor, piano accompanists Raymond Tipper and Gillian Waters and her children, Rachel a pupil of Wells Cathedral school, and her brother Richard, both violinists. Singers include Helen McHale soprano, Patricia Lewis mezzo, Barry Gillman tenor, Graham Simpson baritone and Jim Whyte bass. They will perform some of Gilbert and Sullivan's pieces from the operetta 'Ruddigore'.

Also included will be monologues from Lorna Grainger, and Philip Taylor's 12-year-old daughter, Hannah. The event, in aid of church funds, will cost £3 (£1 for under l8s) at the door.

Concert of carols

THE Living at Home scheme will be holding a concert of carols on December 16 at 7.30pm at Saltash Wesley church.

Tickets at £3 for the 'Spirit of Christmas' concert, which will include three choirs, will be available from Piglets. Further details are available from Mark Fielding on 01752 844360.

Festival craft event

SALTASH Festival's next event will be a Christmas craft and produce fayre at the SHADO centre on December 2 from l0.30am until 12.30pm.

Guildhall certificate

A CERTIFICATE has been shown to members of Saltash town council's development committee.

The certificate was awarded to the council by the Council for the Protection of Rural England for restoration of the Guildhall. Robert Winter of Hunt Winter Association, Liskeard was the architect and Cooper Construction did the work.

Deputy Mayor Eve Storey and development committee chairman Stephen Tait received the award from architect Ashley Barker at a ceremony in the Royal Cornwall Museum. The certificate will be presented to the mayor and council at the monthly meeting of the town council.

Presentation to Kitty

EARLIER this month Kitty Govett travelled with friends from Saltash Wesley church to Truro, where a presentation was made to her for her many years of service to the National Children's Homes charity.

Kitty has organised house-to-house collections, and has also held open days where she and others provide snacks and meals, bring and buy, plant stalls, competitions etc. She has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for NCH over the years.

System in place

THE loop system at Saltash Guildhall is now in place. At the town council's development committee members heard all that was needed was the speaker stand.

Station meeting

SALTASH town councillors have heard that a meeting has been held between the Cornwall county council and Wales and West Railway regarding museum plans for the station building at Saltash.

The meeting was held at the county's request. Stephen Tait said if the scheme could be broadened to involve the whole station Saltash town council would take the lead, and added that the platform is on Railtrack's programme.

It has been recommended that Saltash co-operates with the county to encompass the whole station as part of the Brunel museum project.

Justice service

ON November 5 Bev Thomas, London director of Evangelical Christians for Racial Justice, joined Rev Ian Souter to lead the morning service at Saltash Wesley, on Racial Justice Sunday.

The service was followed in the afternoon by a talk and discussion at St Ive Methodist church on racial justice, the panel comprising Rev Tim Woods, Bev, Chancellor Gwanzuri a student from Zimbabwe, local MP Colin Breed and Rev Souter.

The panel told of their experiences and of how they felt attitudes in general could be changed gradually.

Hospice coffees

A COFFEE day in aid of the Mount Edgcumbe Hospice will be held at 8 Dunheaved Road, Saltash on November 24 from l0.30am.

Three swim

at Sheffield

THREE of Caradon's swimmers competed in the National Masters short course championships in Sheffield.

Mick Swift, a lifeguard at Saltash leisure centre, and a member of Caradon swimming club, entered five events and gained certificates for events including 50 metres front crawl, l00 metres breast stroke, and 200 metres breast stroke. He was also in the national rankings for age group top ten in the country.

Dave Smith gained certificates for 50 metres butterfly, 50 metres backstroke and the 50 metres 4x1 medley.

Chief coach, Simon Ashton, gained 50 metres freestyle and 50 metres butterfly certificates.

Return to Zimbabwe

MEMBERS and friends from Wesley church have been saying farewell to 15 members of Mbare church in Zimbabwe. Twelve young people and three leaders have been staying with church families in Saltash for three weeks, the two churches having formed a partnership a few years ago.
