Civic honour for gig crews

The winning crews from Caradon Gig Club have been honoured by Saltash Mayor Mona Tomaszewska and given a civic reception at the town's Guildhall.

The club's two gigs, Mary Newman and Ann Glanville, were paraded through Fore Street prior to the reception, with the crews walking on each side of their boats, and Mrs Tomaszewska riding in one of them.

The club has won the international gig championships on the Isles of Scilly for the past five years, and last year brought home 55 trophies from regattas throughout Devon and Cornwall, and in the Netherlands.

On Sunday the two gigs took part in their first race of the season, the Three Rivers Pursuit race from Saltash.

Nine gigs from Devon and Cornwall competed the four-and-a-half mile race on the Tamar, Tavy and Lynher - Caradon being the overall winner in Mary Newman.

The results were as follows: Men's race - 1 Mary Newman, 2 Ann Glanville, 3 Lightning (Dartmouth); Ladies race - Lightning, Wolf (Salcombe), Mary Newman; Overall winners: Mary Newman, Lightning, Wolf.

The trophy was presented by Caradon club chairman, Richard Bland, to the crew of Mary Newman.
