Juniors portray a memorable Cinders
The junior members of Saltash Anglican Players presented a traditional 'Cinderella' pantomime this year - written and produced by Isabelle Chenery.
Cinderella was portrayed by Alice Dalrymple, who spoke clearly and sang well, while the duo of ugly sisters Marigold and Buttercup (Laurence Scott and Thomas Hawker) proved a real comic twosome. Samantha Scott made an attractive Prince Charming, and Victoria Moreton caught the eye as Dandini.
Tim Melling was a good Buttons, and memorable performances were also made by Kelly Souter as Fairy Godmother and Zoe Vincent as the prince's footman. Laura Moreton and Hannah Hawker played Baroness Harduppe on alternative nights.
Also taking part were: Maids (Amy Poole, Sarah Bray, Lydia Butler, Fay Vincent, Lizzie Souter, Kathryn Gill), Footmen (William Moreton, Luke Freeman). Wardrobe was down to Marty Vincent, Diana Maynard and mums; stage manager was Richard Margetts, assistant stage manager Emily Dalrymple, curtain Paul Melling, lights Lesley Margetts and musical accompanist John Honywill.
After the interval the senior members of the Players presented a revue 'Comedy Tonight' with songs and comedy items, devised and produced by David Fowell and Ken Speare. This was an entertaining and novel presentation with humour and nostalgia, as well as songs from a bygone age. Mr Honywill was again accompanist, and also played a piano solo.
Concert for the Christmas lights
Saltash Wesley church was full on the evening of February 5 for a visit of the Loveny choir from St Neot.
Bruce Reid, chairman of the Saltash Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed guests the mayor of Saltash Mona Tomaszewska-Honywill, and Eric Lewis, leader of the Caradon cabinet, and Mrs Lewis. The concert, organised by Sue Hooper, was to raise funds for Saltash Christmas street lights, part of which are funded by the Chamber of Commerce and the town council.
Musical director, Mike Kempster, was also compere for the evening and the choir's accompanist was Elizabeth Tamblyn. The programme included songs from Africa, France and other parts of Europe and choir soloists were Peter Bawden, Colin Arthur and David Jones. Guest soloist was Cheryl Stead, mezzo soprano from Plymouth, accompanied by John Knight on the piano.
Mr Reid said l999 was the sixth year Saltash had enjoyed the Christmas lights and £12,000 had been raised over the years for the lights - but they were expensive to provide and maintain. He thanked the audience for their support. The mayor gave the vote of thanks to the choir and soloists.
Station application
At a meeting of Saltash town council development committee at the Guildhall last week Mr R Winter said planning permission had been applied for the Saltash station building.
Still under discussion is the loop system for Saltash Guildhall.
In memory of a caretaker
Saltash town council's civic amenities committee met recently at the Guildhall - and agreed units at l-5 Kingsmill Road, Tamar View Industrial estate will in future be known as 'Libby Court' in memory of the late caretaker at Burraton school.
Members reported that the Christmas festivities had been successful, as had the carol service in Victoria Gardens. The ownership of Langerwell Lane, Saltash was discussed and the committee will approach Caradon council on the matter. Regarding the Saltash Beacon at Waterside the committee proposed that the town council will maintain the beacon at the cost of £195 plus VAT. They also proposed that the mural at Waterside be maintained by the council at the cost of £20 a month. All these recommendations have to be agreed by the full town council.
