THE issue of whether or not Saltash should have a street market has once more come to the fore after a lapse of several years, and has split the town council's policy and resources committee over whether or not they think it would be good for the town.
Councillor Marjorie Schikowsky said a survey she had undertaken at the time showed that Saltash Chamber of Commerce and several traders were against the idea and advice had also been sought from professional consultants.
During the re-opened debate the town clerk, Mrs Marily Small, said it was possible to control street markets but added it was known that some Saltash Caradon Councillors were against them anyway.
Councillor Paul Adams suggested a street market could be established for a trial period, and it should not cause competition for local traders. However, Councillor Sue Hooper thought an experienced person on markets should first address the council.
A vote on the issue revealed four councillors in favour and four against. The casting vote in favour was given by committee chairman Councillor Joyce Mepstead.
