PLANS are afoot to provide a drop-in centre in Saltash for local youngsters.

The proposal, for a shelter at Warfelton field behind Saltash leisure centre, has been discussed by the town council's civic amenities committee.

Members looked at plans of a number of shelters which it was thought would fulfil the need of providing somewhere for young people to gather. It was estimated that the proposed structure could cost around £800. It would be made locally.

The proposal was given unanimous approval by the committee, and as a result planning permission would have to be applied for from Caradon council - although everything has to be initially ratified by the full town council.

Members said there has been a need for a drop-in centre in the town for years, and underlined that they are trying to meet a promise to the local youngsters who do not want to join youth clubs, but just wish to have somewhere to meet and talk.

There have been an array of complaints over recent months about young people gathering in large numbers in local streets - and of under-aged drinking and resulting noise.

The committee also discussed the provision of bus shelters in Saltash.

It was said there is no shelter for North Road, for those waiting for long-distance buses, and councillors were told that Maybrook Drive seems unlikely to be provided with a shelter in spite of repeated requests by members of the public and town councillors.
