DIVISION ONE
Fowey 3 St Cleer 3
St Cleer gained their second successive promotion following an entertaining 3-3 draw at Fowey on Saturday.
They now require just four points from their remaining two games also to secure a second League title in a row.
St Cleer had won both of their previous encounters against Fowey this season, but travelled to the match knowing that this game would be very difficult considering how many injuries they had.
On a very poor playing surface the Saints dominated possession, but yet again struggled to find the back of the net in the early stages.
Midway through the first half Fowey scored against the run of play. The referee awarded a free-kick which was taken quickly. For once the St Cleer defence fell asleep and the Fowey striker was on hand to lash the ball home.
Shortly afterwards, Jez Pomfret made a great save to keep the Saints in the game as the resolute defence, marshalled by the impressive Nick Trevarthan and Roger Quaintance, held firm.
The Saints fell further behind in the second period, before they reduced the arrears from an Ed Bradshaw header.
Manager Russell Hale then made some tactical changes, and the introduction of Dave Wade gave greater balance to the side.
Soon after, an in swinging corner from Jamie Coates caused mayhem in the box and Bradshaw was on hand to press the ball in the danger zone, where it was diverted across the line by one of the Fowey defenders.
St Cleer knew that a point would be good enough to secure promotion, but they continued to create further chances. On 70 minutes Bradshaw scored his second of the match to put the visitors ahead for the first time.
Fowey, who themselves were still in the promotion race, pressed hard and, despite a great saving tackle in the penalty box by Trevarthan, the ball ran loose and Fowey equalised.
Hale was full of praise for the players, committee and sponsors of the club, all of whom have contributed to the team's success this term.
'This promotion is fully deserved, as we have been leading the Division all season,' he said. 'We just need to keep our focus for the final two matches and hopefully the title will be ours as well.'
The first of those two matches is tomorrow, when St Cleer host St Merryn (2.30 pm).
The final game, which could be the title decider, is on Saturday, May 2, against Saltash United at Warfelton (2.30 pm).
