Saltash Sailing Club held the prizegiving for its cadet section last Friday night, with an impressive line-up of awards.

The Club is a recognised Royal Yachting Association training establishment and certificates at level 2 were presented to Nathan Harding, Simon Hinks and Philip Spreadborough with Andrew Gaved achieving level 3.

Trophies for dinghy racing throughout the year were presented to the Commodore, Nina Lillie to many recipients including Robert Staines and Matthew Blakestone (slow handicap fleet), Becky Moore (medium handicap fleet), Sam Johnson and Philip Spreadborough (Mirrors) and Tamsyn Ellwood (Toppers).

Tamsyn also won the Perpetual Topper Trophy, which had been presented to SSC last year by Philip Rundle, MBE. All individual trophies had been kindly donated to the cadets for this year by Plymouth Trophyman.

Samantha Martin won the Peter Baigent Cup for the most improved juhior cadet, with Nathan Harding as runner-up. The Mayor's shield, presented to SSC by councillor Paul Adams in 1998, was awarded this year to Robert Adams in 1998, was awarded this year to Robert Staines as the overall most improved cadet, with Alex Johnson as runner-up.

A new cup, the Yandell Endeavour Trophy was presented by Viv Yandell to Ian Mabbett as the best cadet for 1999, with Matthew Blakestone as runner-up. Ian won this award not only for his performance on the water but also for his contribution to cadet life at SSC, helping others, helming the club wayfarer dinghy for the youngsters and as well, undertaking a cruise on one of the Ocean Youth Trust yachts to the Channel Islands.

In addition to the splendid Endeavour Trophy, John and Viv Yandell (who are established and very supportive members of SSC) presented a travelling bursary to the value of £250 each year for the next ten years.

This will enable youngsters to widen their sailing horizons by applying for funds to travel to other more far-flung sailing events and training schemes.

The cadets expressed their appreciation with a hearty "three cheers" and grateful thanks were also expressed to all those who help them with their progress and achievements afloat. Their action packed winter programme starts now - call SSC on 01752 845988 for more details.
