Sailing- Close call for Spellbound

The weather for the first race of the second Thursday night Series initially looked as though it wasn't going to be very nice with squally showers for most of the early afternoon. It did however clear up to leave a dry pleasant evening into which 30 boats ventured out.

The wind was mainly westerly ranging from Force one to four in strength. The course set for IRC and PYA was C, L, G (Camel's Head, Lyhner, Brunel Green) and for PYB it was H (Hamoaze), L, G with abeat up to Lyhner.

There were close starts off the line in all three classes with no boats over although in the PYB race, Spellbound (John Hearl) had a very close call only just making it back over the line before the start gun.

It didn't seem to do him a lot of harm though he still managed to lead for most of the race.

In the IRC race, Firestorm Too (Paul Radgick) and Four Mates (Paul Allen) got very close as they were rounding Bull Point and raising their spinnakers. Four Mates then broached forcing Firestorm to take avoiding action for a short while until everything settled down.

Forthcoming events: Sat. June 12 and Sun June 13 - Saltash Town Regatta - dinghy races to include race in aid of Antony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust on Saturday morning.

Results: IRC - 1st. Shara of York (Peter Noakes), 2nd Judicious (John and Nina Lillie), 3rd. Firestorm Too (Paul Radgick).

PYA - Inky Paper (Trevor Bardwell-Jones), Hello (Gerry Smith), Sea Bee (Derek Prickett and Dave Hearn).

PYB - Spellbound (John Hearl), Nein Nein Fraulein (Paul Ormsby), Rough Diamond (Dave Moore).

Race in aid

of leukemia

INVITATIONS are open to dinghies of PY1100 or faster to SALTASH sailing club's Long Distance Race in aid of the Antony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust tomorrow (Saturday) June 12. Starting from the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club Line Plymouth at 10.30 am onto Saltash Town Regatta where apart from Dinghy racing there will be gig and flash boat racing.

The rumours may well be true of a live Jazz band at the Sailing Club after the prizegiving on Sunday night.

The event is being strongly supported by the growing Saltash Laser II section established in 1997 in memory of Rob Hearl, who so untimely passed away of leukemia.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Antony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust.

There is a first prize of a Tim Thompson Print - "The first Race".
