Sailing - Alan helmed Zipper to a surprise handicap win
Dave Gray was the officer of the day for TORPOINT Mosquito Sailing Club's Tuesday evening series on June 29. He had the difficult job of setting a course with wind conditions ashore varying from conditions afloat. With the first start at 1840 nine boats headed north to 'capital ship' buoy with two guns at the start signalling 'Echo' over the line but returning to recover to fifth place.
As usual Duck 'N' Jibe pulled into a lead over the water and never challenged. The surprise of the race was Zipper helmed by this series sponsor Alan Blackmore winning on handicap. At the second start five minutes later Sweet Pea had the best start who held the lead for some time with Ladybird in close attendance.
The windward beat sorted the men from the boys (and girls) with Pencirrus taking the lead and crossing the line first and winning on handicap.
Results - Tuesday Series II, 2B - Pencirrus (R Smith), Ladybird (D Saunders), Crisp (M Swain).
2A - Zipper (A Blackmore), Cathy (J Snawden), Duck 'N' Jype (R Morgan).
Thurs July 1 - Mirror Dinghy - James Watts; Dave Green; James Ogilvie.
Handicap Class - Joe Snawdon (Hornet), G Ward (Enterprise), T Aughey (Enterprise).
Laser Radial - Elliott Watts, Adrian Sullivan, Adam Finch.
Laser dinghy - Andrew Burgess, Keith Watts, Ben Watts.
On Monday with light winds not holding, the Mirrors and Toppers had a difficult sail before running out of time and being towed in. Lasers managed to finish but with very light winds at ferry mark the leaders drifted passed the ferry and unexpected good results for others as a wind filled in.
Results - First safety boat Dory One drew Dave and Bonny towing in the Mirrors and Toppers 2nd Dory Two fetching the Toppers before they got to the Torpoint ferry.
Laser Radial - 1, Paul Cox; 2, Adam Finch; 3, Ashton Lister.
Laser Dinghy - Patrick Hunt, Ben Watts, Andrew Burgess.
On Tuesday a good course was set with much spinnaker work. A short course of four legs utilising St John Lake on a rising tide. The wind was SW two occasionally three and it stayed dry. Duck 'N' Jype took her position at the head of the fleet. The following pack of Dogs Jollocks and Cathy were close behind. Protocol ran aground off West Mud Flats and retired. All finished the shortened course.
The final results were - Cathy (J Snawden), Dogs Jollocks (S Wassel), Vanity Flare (T Burne).
The coastguard on Wizard lost his hat but it was retrived safe and sound after the race finished!
In the 2B class young crew for Ladybird managed to get their captain to win before going to Italy for three years tomorrow. The fleet were very close with two and a half minutes between the first five boats. Result: Ladybird (D Saunders), Pencirrus (R Smith), Sweet Pea (B Hallet).
Although the weather was cloudy and overcast for the fifth race in the Thursday night series at Saltash, the rain stayed away. The wind was south-westerly force 2-3 and there were 30 boats on the water. The course for IRC and PYA was C, I, G (Camel's Head, Beggar's Island, Brunel Green) and for PYB it was H, G (Harnoaze, Brunel Green) making it a beat initially down river to Bull Point.
The start was against a rising tide and as is often the case in this sort of situation some boats were over the line at the start, namely Hello (Gerry Smith) and Inky Paper (Trevor Bardwell-Jones), both in PYA; both redressed.
The starts for the IRC and PYA races were both a bit crowded with boats jockeying for best position off the line. The first boats off the line in each race were; Growler (Neville Davenport) in IRC, Jabberwocky (Brian Cann) in PYA and Nein Nein Fraulein (Paul Ormsby) in PYB.
Lacewing (Terry Curtis) had a good race taking line honours in the IRC race and wimling by well over two minutes on the water with Growler crossing second and Confucius (Dave Oliver) crossing third. On corrected time however, Shara Of York (Peter Noakes) came through to take first place with Growler second and Lacewing third.
In the PYA race, Jabberwocky, who continues to do well, crossed the line four minutes ahead of their nearest rival, Chancer (Martin Watts). Jabberwocky also won on corrected time but Chancer was beaten into third place by Hello. The PYB race was quite close by comparison with Rough Diamond (Dave Moore) taking line honours only 44 seconds ahead of Enigma (Gordon Phypers) which meant that on corrected time Rough Diamond only beat Enigma by 22 seconds. Nein Nein Fraulein took third place.
Result - IRCA - Shara of York (Peter Noakes), Firestorm Too (Paul Radgick), Judicious (John and Nina Lillie).
PYB - Rough Diamond (Dave Moore), Spellbound (John Hearl), Joburg (Peter White).
PYA - Jabberwocky (Brian Cann), Hello (Gerry Smith), Chancer (Martin Watts).
A cloudy afternoon did nothing to detract from the colourful scene in Looe Bay on Saturday as old and new, large and small sailing craft did battle around two different courses.
The sailing club kept to a course inside the Lugger Fleet and despite only light South Westerly winds racing was close, especially in the Redwing Fleet with the top four positions changing several times during the race and only one minute seperating first placed Derek Hocking from third placed Peter Kinver, enjoying the benefit of new sails after three rounds.
Close racing was also the order of the day as Steve Sargent shaded out Father Graham by a mere 14 seconds in the Enterprise.
Results - Mirrors : 1- Philip Godbolt and Christian Walker, 2- Robyn Newton and crew. Redwings: - Derek Hocking and Mark Delf, Bud Coole and Dave Darlington, Peter Kinver and Arthur Kinver. Enterprise: Steve Sargent and Sandi Turner, Graham Sargent and Peter Southern. Laser: Gareth Shaw, Ben Crabb, Tom Shaw.
