Last Saturday Liskeard/Looe were due to play Roseland in a League fixture. Roseland were however forced to cry off and Liskeard/Looe were lucky to obtain a fixture against Launceston Castle.

The match was played on a very wet pitch which became progressively sticky and heavy. Castle started very strongly spreading the ball wide and deservedly gained an early lead with a try from Braden Hifney. Liskeard/Looe struck back with a penalty by Andy Harris and started to put Castle under some pressure. Following some excellent pressure Liskeard/Looe gained the lead, thanks to a hard won try by Nathan Gilbert shortly before half time.

The second half, like the first, was an evenly contested affair. The Liskeard/Looe pack were gaining good possession at the set pieces and, on balance, Castle probably had the better of possession at the breakdown. A period of end to end play eventually resulted in a second penalty for Andy Harris. Castle, however, were not about to concede defeat and on numerous occasions threatened the Liskeard/Looe line. It was only committed defensive play which kept them out.

It was full back Tim Weale who finally put the result beyond question when, following a good running movement, he joined in the attack to receive a beautifully times pass from Tom Pollard. Weale then ran in a great try from 30 metres. Another very entertaining game played out by two evenly matched teams who, despite the boggy pitch and slippery ball, determined to play as open a game as was possible. Well worth a trip to watch.
