This was not quite the ideal start of the season for Lankelly skipper Jamie Miller who left the field after just 10 minutes with a broken hand and his leadership was sorely missed.
Although there were some excellent individual performances, notably from Richard Chapman at fly-half and Steve Brown in the pack, the Fowey side failed to stick to the team plan and their dominance in the pack did not reap the dividends it deserved.
Nevertheless, a win in the first game of the season was more than welcome. After Steve Brown's try on the quarter-hour to equalise St Colomba's opening score in the fifth minute, the visitors went over again to regain the lead. Richard Chapman then scored an excellent try to level the scores at the interval.
Although the Lankelly pack was pushing the St Colomba eight all over the park, it was the visitors who regained the lead and were 15-10 up as the game went into stoppage time. When Steve Powell went over in the corner for a final Lankelly try, a draw seemed a fair result but Justin Knight's conversion from the touch-line hit the cross bar before dropping over the right side for Lankelly to clinch the game. St Colomba's tries were scored by Mike Suter (2) and Steve Rivett.
