Playing their first game for three weeks Liskeard/Looe Colts visited Camborne to play the first leg in the Cornwall County Cup competition. Given the recent bad weather, ground conditions on the first team pitch were excellent and there was large support for the home team.

Camborne had the wind advantage in the first half and Liskeard welcomed back Martin Ruck after a two month injury lay off, though Liskeard were without Hannah and Ball. Rice immediately made his presence felt in the front row and with play evenly balanced in the first 10 minutes a good run by Farris at fly half led to an early try by centre Simon Lee.

Liskeard's 5-0 lead was short lived and sustained pressure by the bigger Camborne pack and some poor Liskeard fringe tackling saw Camborne scored an unconverted try to level the points. Camborne's forward dominance continued encouraged by their vocal supporters and the game moved from end to end and only stout defence by Liskeard prevented a further Camborne score.

However, after 30 minutes Camborne scored a further converted try to go ahead 12-5. Shortly after, Cooper almost scored for Liskeard after an excellent threequarter move initiated by Farris, who was having an excellent game, but Cooper stepped into touch. A high kick into Liskeard's 22 led to confusion, with the strong wind not helping, and this led to a further converted Camborne try to make it 19-5 in favour of the home team at half time.

A strong half time talk by coach Gordon Jones and captain Williams plus some replacement and positional changes saw Liskeard start the second half with renewed vigour. Running more at the Camborne eight they achieved more possession within the forwards and this allowed the faster Liskeard backs to run the ball wide.

Good runs by Burchell, Farris and Gailer exploited Camborne and eventually another fine run by Gailer led to an unconverted try to make it 19-10 pts. The struggle between the two packs continued and it was end to end stuff which enthralled the crowd.

Scrum half Jones and fly half Farris worked well and Farris was a constant menace with this probing runs and the way he brought the backs into play.

The back row of Hill, Arnold and Williams gave excellent support in attack and defence and Austin and Masters were the equal of their counterparts in this half. Two further Farris runs supported by wing R Sheer led to a very good try by Sheer to narrow the deficit to 19-15 pts with five minutes to go.

The excitement was intense, the Camborne supporters worried and with five minutes to go Liskeard gave it their all. Prop Collins and hooker Saunders revelled in the combative play and further pressure led to Gailer scoring a dazzling solo try which Burchell converted in the last minute of the match.

This was a tremendous victory and all the participants are to be congratulated. Players - Gailer, Sheer, Lee, Burchell, Cooper, Tamblyn, Farris, Jones, Williams, Arnold, Hill, Austin, Masters, Harris, Morford, Collins, Saunders and Rice.
