This was a classic case of a game with two difference halves. Callington have a great first half performance and displayed some excellent rugby.
Winger Rob Congdon scored the first try for Callington early in the game by coming on to the opposite wing and receiving a good ball from Chris Rowse to touch down in the far corner. Callington held good possession of the ball using their forwards Sean Francey and Pete Congdon to ram down the Camels defence.
From this, Callington were unlucky not to score tries on a couple occasions, hooker Alan Jasper ran on a solo effort and just got stopped before the line as did Nick Woodley, so as a result of the strong defence they settled for a drop goal in front of the posts from Jerry Jones.
Callington managed to squeeze another try in just before the interval, this time coming from the other winger Mark Jacob who was able to trundle the ball forward taking with him the Camels defence to give them a 13-0 lead at half-time.
Wadebridge responded fiercely in the second half by scoring a try right from the start. Callington managed to answer this back with a great try from Jerry Jones who demonstrated some superb footwork to weave through their defence and score next to the posts leaving a simple conversion for himself. The Camels then proceeded to bounce back, hitting Callington's defence hard, but Callington put in some great challenges up front from Clive Stokes and Cliff Turner to prevent them scoring. However, Wadebridge battled on eventually managed to score two more tries and conversions which brought them within a whisker of drawing the game, taking the final score to 20-19.
Although Callington performed well in the first half, their second half performance was not as encouraging, due mainly to a lapse in their defensive strategy. Callington will now work on this in an effort to see off Veor in the league whom they face this Saturday away.
