More than 700 people were at the charity auction held at Killigarth Manor, Polperro on Saturday, in aid of the Harbour Lights Trust, which was ably conducted by local residents and presenters of ITV's This Morning - Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan.

Bidding was fast and furious for the 58 lots on offer, with a staggering £7,000 being raised. This included the proceeds from the raffle and a sponsored head shave during the interval, the courage of Lenny Beard and "Franco" under the razor expertly used by Paula, raising £300.

Top bid was £775 for a make over on Richard and Judy's show, by holidaymaker Jackie Welch from Bromley in Kent, who has a cottage in Polperro.

So many prizes were donated for the raffle, the top prize being a £150 Brittany Ferries voucher, that some have been kept back for a charity cricket match in aid of the Trust to be held later in the summer.

Everyone who attended the event had a great time, and Richard and Judy, who took it in turns to wield the gavel, were happy to pose for souvenir photographs and sign autographs. On the entertainment bill was a 'scratch' band especially for the evening, 'Cobblers' which comprised Lansallos Rector, Father William Braviner on drums in 'Blues Brother' attire, his friend from the North East, Malcolm Barnett, and Martin the 'Mad Hatter' from Polperro.

During the evening a cheque for £1,000 from the Trust was presented to Mr David Mann from Newlyn, representing The Fishermen's Mission. The Trust was set up by the family of Polperro fisherman Daniel Kebble, who was lost at sea from his boat Harbour Lights, on January 8. The funds are to provide safety equipment for local fishermen, and the next thing the Trust is hoping to organise is the funding of a 'sea survival' course for as many fishermen from Looe and Polperro who would like to take it up.

Terry, Elaine and Carrie Kebble say they would like to express their grateful thanks to everyone who donated gifts and prizes and helped in any way at the auction. 'People were so generous and Daniel would have been very proud' they said.

Jackie is a regular visitor to Polperro where she has a holiday cottage.
