I hope Mr Brian's letter is no more than a bit of 'Labour bashing'. He cannot possibly think of General Pinochet as just some poor old eighty-year-old!

Or does he not believe that the former Dictator was responsible for the torture and murder of thousands of people?

Probably, Mr Brian wants to show solidarity with Lady Thatcher - who does have reason to be grateful for Pinochet's help in the Falklands War.

Without that costly victory, she would not have won another General Election.

It is a cause of shame for us today when a British Government lets a mass-murderer go free. It is mortifying to realise that it was almost certainly forced to do so by the United States.

It was U.S. secret services who helped the armed forces overthrow Allende's democratically elected Government. They put Pinochet in power.

Washington hardly wants this fact exposed to the spotlight of publicity accompanying his trial for crimes against humanity!
