TODAY is Remembrance Sunday and many in South East Cornwall will take time to pause and remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. It’s also a time to remember those who experience bereavement, disability and pain, and who continue to carry the burden of the consequences of war.

In some towns in the district, such as Torpoint, Saltash and Callington, Remembrance Day parades are going ahead, while in other places such as Looe, and Liskeard, local Royal British Legion branches will be holding ceremonies at the war memorial.

At the Centotaph in London, The Queen will attend the National Service of Remembrance this morning, with the Prince of Wales to lay a wreath on her behalf.

Royal British Legion detachments gather on Horse Guards Parade and at Whitehall, to make their way to the Cenotaph.

Royal Marine buglers will introduce a two-minute silence, followed by a gun salute from the Royal Horse Artillery.

The service will be broadcast live on the BBC and on BBCiPlayer and coverage is set to begin at 10.15am.

Back in South East Cornwall, Liskeard’s Town Council will officially grant the Freedom of the Town to the local Royal British Legion today, after the Remembrance Service at St Martin’s Church.

The practice of awarding the Freedom of the Town dates back to medieval times and is the highest honour a Council can bestow on a person or organisation. Liskeard Town Council members agreed to the gesture as they felt it fitting, in a year when both the national RBL and the Liskeard branch are celebrating their 100th anniversary.

Mayor of Liskeard Simon Cassidy said: “The Royal British Legion is the country’s largest Armed Forces charity and provides support every day to our service personnel, veterans and their families.

“The Liskeard Branch has supported Liskeard for over 100 years and deserves all the praise we can give. Awarding the Freedom of our Town signifies the very high regard we have for all their hard work and service to our community.”
