ORGANISERS of a 24-hour relay for Cancer Research have labelled the event as a 'great success' after raising more than £44,000 – double their original target. Claire Wevell and the Liskeard Relay for Life Committee were delighted after the weekend's event attracted hundreds of people from the local community to raise money at Liskeard School and Community College. More than 300 people, including cancer survivors, took part in the event which saw teams go around the track for 24 hours from 12pm Saturday to 12pm Sunday. There were also stalls and musical performances. 'The atmosphere was electric which kept the team members on the track going,' said Claire. 'Cancer Research wanted us to make goals before the event so we set a target of £20,000,' she said. 'To raise as much money as we did in South East Cornwall is unknown. 'People have been so generous, the committee is just overwhelmed.' An event at Liskeard Sports Club has been organised for the public, on July 4 at 8pm, when the final total will be announced.
