THE ROYAL British Legion would like to see its town’s war memorial relocated – and it is asking local people to give their views on the matter.

Liskeard’s War Memorial is in Castle Park, and while in an elevated spot, the location is up a steep slope with very little nearby parking.

Services held rely on the goodwill of a nearby resident for electricity.

“We would like to relocate the war memorial to a more central and accessible location,” said a spokesperson for the RBL.

“There’s an ever-increasing number who attend the memorial each Remembrance Day, but limited access for veterans or people with disabilities or mobility issues.”

The RBL has put forward the former Cattle Market as a possible new home for the war memorial, and says that with redevelopment currently being planned, it could be “an ideal time to reinstate the memorial in the new community space being created”.

Last year, a Remembrance service was held at the former Cattle Market as it allowed more space for social distancing.

A petition has been started online at www.change.org as a way to gauge support for the idea of moving the memorial, an action RBL president Trevor Newbury acknowledges would be a significant undertaking.

Meanwhile Liskeard Town Council plans to hold a meeting with the RBL, and other interested parties, to discuss the issue.

The view of the War Memorials Trust is that a war memorial “should, where possible, be preserved in its original location”.

“The relocation of a memorial can be a high risk, as well as an expensive, project,” it says. “The Trust only supports the relocation of a war memorial if its current position is putting the memorial at risk, or if it is no longer accessible to the public for commemoration.”
