The Millennium Trophy was contested at Launceston Golf Club last week by 43 pairs of seniors.
A better-ball full handicap stableford saw some very good scores recorded, despite several temporaries in operation as yet more
improvement work was being carried out on some of the main greens.
A total of 21 twos were achieved, John Mullins, John Russell and club secretary Peter Jones getting two each.
One of Peter's twos was on the fourth where, having driven to within six-feet, he found he had inadvertently used his three wood instead of his intended five. Luckily, this not only helped in that competition, but improved his eclectic score to good effect.
Ken Rogers and Dave Renardson were thanked by the captain for receiving and checking the cards, and Robin and Tim Johnson (no relation) for finalising the eclectic results.
All seven winning pairs were well above par, with the 2008 Trophy winners John Mullins and Derek Ratcliffe recording a magnificent 45 points, but only beating the chasing pair of Tom Northam and Ray Williams on count-back.
Results: 1, Johnson Mullins and Derek Ratcliffe (45 points); 2, Tom Northam and Ray Williams (45); 3, Gerald Cramp and Graham Nevitte (43); 4, Brian Ben-David and Tim Johnson (41); 5, Terry Seabourne and Tony Bowden (41); 6, Peter Cole and Roger Slee (41); 7, Peter Wall and Terry Swords (40).
As the Millennium Trophy was the last round of this year's eclectic competition, captain Brian Ben-David announced the results during his Trophy prize-giving, and Peter Jones emerged as the eventual winner ahead of the 53 other members.
Results: 1, Peter Jones (60.5 points); 2, Pat Hayne, Tim Johnson (61); 3, Brian Johns, Tom Northam and Roger Slee (61.5).
Launceston Seniors travelled to Okehampton for a match where the home team were only able to field 12 players – so four of the visitors had to play as pseudo home and away pairs.
The match was a close affair, ending in a 3-3 draw, and both teams are looking forward to a similar contest this month at Launceston.
Results: Brian Ben-David (captain) and Richard Dudley lost three and two, Graham Nevitte and Tim Johnson won four and three, Derek Ratcliffe and Peter Howard lost five and four, Robin Johnson (vice captain) and Gerald Cramp won three and two, Morley Brown and Dave Harding won one-up, Don Slee and John Hicks lost five and three.
Yelverton's veterans travelled to Launceston the following day attempting to defend their 5-3 win at home earlier in the season – and they managed to do so with a 4-3 victory.
Both teams included a 'Tony Bowden' who, surprisingly, had identical handicaps. Captain Ben-David's disappointment at his team losing was somewhat softened by the sharing of the 'Nearest the pin' wine prize after the match.
Results: Brian Ben-David (captain) and Dave Harding won six and five, Adrian Williams and Neville Helme lost two and one, Graham Nevitte and Graham Chanter won one-up, Rodney Duke and Graham Williams lost one-down, Gerald Cramp and Peter Howard halved, Tony Bowden and John Hicks lost five and four, Peter Jones (secretary) and Robin Johnson (vice captain) won three and two, Derek Davey and Don Slee lost three and two.
The Kivell Bogey failed to cause its usual chaos, as all but one card was correctly completed, although a few players thought they had beaten the course on holes where they hadn't. Only the eventual winner, Chris Sandercock, ended up with a plus score.
Result: 1, C Sandercock (plus-one); 2, J McCaffery, I Hoar, P Martyn-Uglow (all 0).
Meanwhile, in the away friendly fixture against Yelverton Golf Cub, the Launceston team lost 4-2. Paul Hicks, captain for the day, continued with his usual system of fining members for misdemeanors – the money will all go to the home captain's charity.
