HMS Raleigh’s Commanding Officer has written an open letter to community leaders in the Torpoint area outlining the training that is continuing at the naval base during the coronavirus lockdown.
In the letter, Captain Richard Harris says he is grateful for the support of members of the public as the workforce on the base carries out the basic training for recruits and other essential training, such as getting personnel ready to respond to the Covid-19 situation.
’While we continue Royal Navy initial training and some specialist training, you may see staff and trainees travelling to the establishment from their homes, or out training in the local area,’ said Capt Harris.
’HMS Raleigh follows the guidance issued by Public Health England. Social distancing rules are followed by our service personnel and civilians, except in a very few instances where a number of essential training tasks do not make this possible.
’Recruits have been told to self-isolate for 14 days prior to joining Raleigh and are accommodated separately from the main Raleigh population for a further 14 days on arrival.
’Many of my staff are working remotely from site in accordance with Government guidelines. For those who are required to come to work, we have made every effort to maintain a safe living, working and training environment. They can go home daily or weekly as routines allow although onsite accommodation is available if instructors choose to isolate from their families.
’The gymnasium and café facilities remain closed.
’Whilst most of us who wear uniform are used to uncertainty and operating in difficult circumstances, COVID-19 is presenting challenges for all of us professionally and domestically – I do not underestimate the concerns this brings. Whilst it is vitally important that training continues at HMS RALEIGH, having the support and understanding of the local community makes a big difference to my workforce and their families. We are very grateful, thank you.’
