COUNTY DIVISION ONE Callington v Redruth THE British summer certainly came to Callington's rescue on Saturday when the rain saved them from what was looking like certain defeat. Redruth had won an important toss and, not surprisingly, had asked the home side to bat on a low and slow track. Suffice to say that this was a very poor batting display, even allowing for the conditions, a point reflected by the fact that 'extras' was the highest scorer with 19. Only Andy Shorten could muster double figures and he only made 12. Redruth's teenage seam bowlers did the damage, with Liam Norwell taking six for 28 from his nine overs and Ben Stevens three for seven from his six. The Callington wickets were dropping like flies and, with the score on 56 for nine in the 31st over, the home supporters were glad to see the rain come and give Callington an undeserved escape. The two sides agreed to play the following day, but that, too, had to be postponed. No new date for the game has yet been agreed. Gorran travel to Troon tomorrow, while their youth teams are taking part in the St Gluvias Cricket Festival on Sunday. q q q l THE weather took its toll on representative cricket over the last seven days. Cornwall Under-21s' games with the Isle of Wight at Wadebridge and Dorset at Stalbridge were both washed out without a ball being bowled. Four out of seven Southern Counties Championship games have now been lost to the weather. Cornwall Under-17s' two-day game with Gloucestershire at Falmouth was also abandoned at lunchtime on the first day due to a saturated ground.
