CALLINGTON Community College is among five study support providers to be awarded the prestigious national 'QISS' certificate. This recognises the quality of the study support they offer to their students. The college has been awarded the 'Established' level of the nationally recognised Quality in Study Support (QISS) kitemark programme. The scheme, which forms an integral part of the Government's drive to promote quality in study support, provides public recognition that Government standards are being met. It supports the development of networks of professionals engaged in reflection of practice, raises achievement and improves schools and other learning organisations. Study support (out of school hours learning) covers a wide range of learning activities which take place outside normal lesson times. This includes activities such as homework and study clubs, sport and outdoor activities, the creative arts, community volunteering, mentoring, the opportunities to pursue particular interests, such as ICT and languages and learning about learning, for example studying and thinking skills. The five Cornish organisations worked in partnership with Cornwall Outdoor and Rex Hall, a nationally renowned education consultant. The process involved rigorous assessment of their study support, including evaluation workshops and a substantial portfolio of evidence. The final assessment involved a presentations to four national QISS consultants who visited the county to assess each organisation on the quality of study support provided. Callington Community College's Advanced Skills Teacher Jonathon Plunkett and study support assistant Karen Gold gave an outstanding presentation which focused on the central role of study support in the development and continued improvement of the College, and on the provision for its students.
