POST offices in the area are set to be closed down following an announcement on Tuesday.

The Post Office Ltd has confirmed that the following local branches will close, although the actual closing dates for each branch will not be confirmed until October 21: Addington, Albaston, Antony, Cargreen (mobile service), Cross Park, Golant, Luckett, Merrymeet (mobile service), Raleigh, Seaton, St Cleer, Trevelmond (mobile service), Tywardreath and West Looe Spar. These are among some 48 closures that are happening in the wider area.

Tim Nickolls, network development manager for Post Office Ltd, said: 'These are difficult decisions that have not been taken lightly.

'We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation.'

A post office worker said: 'Obviously we're not happy with the situation.

Farce

'The whole set up has been a farce and customers have commented to me that they are not happy about having to go into Liskeard town centre to post anything.'

The closure of these branches comes after a decision made by the Government that 2,500 post offices nationwide should be closed in an effort to streamline the service and save money.

Customer Donald King said: 'I use it every day and it's much easier than parking down in the town. I come in at least four days out of five.'

Next week Cornwall County Council are due to begin a judicial review into the legality of the closure programme.

County cllr Roger Jones said: 'It is extremely sad that they didn't listen to the responses from the community.

'At the main post office people queue down the street so this will make it even worse.'
