Cornwall’s Liberal Democrats have called on the Duchy’s six Conservative MPs to demand more cash for Cornwall in the wake of the DUP deal to support the Government.

Frances Tippett, chair of Cornwall Liberal Democrats, said: ‘Cornwall’s Conservative MPs made a great deal of noise during the election about how they could secure a better deal for Cornwall as part of the governing party.

‘In the light of the £1bn bribe to the DUP let’s see if they can now put their money where their mouths were.

‘Cornwall’s health service is facing a £277m shortfall and £26m is being cut from the Duchy’s education budget, just two examples of what we are facing.

‘Based on the DUP deal, the six Cornish MPs could expect an extra £600m funding for Cornwall over the next few years which would meet these needs and many others.’

MP for South East Cornwall Sheryll Murray said: ‘Of course we’ll be making the case for Cornwall.

‘The issue of funding is covered in our manifesto. Once we leave the EU there will be a fund to benefit communities. We need to wait for an announcement from the Secretary of State before we can make demands for one thing or another.’
