OPPOSITION to the ‘Devonwall’ proposal has been reaffirmed by Cornwall Council.

The Boundary Commission idea, which would lead to the creation of a cross-Tamar parliamentary constituency, was restated this autumn.

At a full council meeting last week, Mebyon Kernow’s Councillor Dick Cole said he was pleased to present an anti-Devonwall motion that ‘everyone could unite around’.

Cllr Cole proposed the motion that Cornwall Council write to the Prime Minister and the Government to request that the boundary review be halted, and that the imposition of a cross-Tamar constituency be stopped.

The motion also called for further boundary reviews to respect the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, a convention which the Government announced in 2014 would apply to Cornwall, and which Mebyon Kernow says would be contravened by a Devonwall constituency.

The proposal was seconded by St Germans and Landulph Councillor Jesse Foot and approved by the councillors.
