FOWEY Town Council has successfully argued with the Boundary Commission that any changes regarding its electoral area will not be implemented until the 2021 elections. In December last year, during a visit to Fowey by representatives of the commission, the council was told the current electoral divisions did not meet the commission’s requirements in terms of numerical balance. Questions were then raised as to the optimum number of councillors. Following this, the council was asked to carry out a comprehensive review by March 2017 so the May 2017 Cornwall Council elections could be held with the new boundaries. After much consideration, the council told the commission it did not think it was desirable to make such a substantial change within the timescale set as it did not give time for meaningful consultation with the local electorate.
