The leader of Mebyon Kernow, the Party for Cornwall, has challenged the establishment parties to stop ignoring Cornwall when they consider constitutional changes across the United Kingdom.
His comments followed the launch of a report by the cross-party Constitution Reform Group, which has made the case for a more federal UK . The Group argue that the ’existing union should be replaced with fully devolved government’ in England , Scotland ,Wales and Northern Ireland ’with each given full sovereignty over its own affairs.’
They also wish that the ’nations’ of the UK would then be ’encouraged to pool sovereignty to cover the matters they wish to be dealt with on a shared basis’ in a smaller House of Commons.
Cllr Dick Cole of MK said: ’In all of this, the position and democratic future of Cornwall appears not to be deemed worthy of discussion.
’I would appeal to one and all to get behind MK’s call for a legislative National Assembly, which would make sure that Cornwall is no longer the UK ’s forgotten nation.’
MK’s full proposals are set out in the publication ’Towards a National Assembly of Cornwall’.
